“I had the opportunity to work with McSweeney’s, US, to illustrate a new jacket design for Wajahat Ali’s Domestic Crusaders. The idea was to reinterpret the existing book cover and present the story in a fresh illustrative book cover for their readers.

Since the narrative revolves around a Pakistani family living in the US, I drew inspiration from the vibrant visual culture of Pakistani truck art. One of the most fascinating aspects of truck art is its use of framed borders and compartments to hold objects and elements of the design language.Borrowing from that approach, I used the borders as windows and showed the characters interacting with each other. I used the colourful palette of truck art and integrated my palette as well. Icreated colourful character illustrations of the family members.

It was a fun, challenging, and deeply engaging illustration project, and an exciting opportunity to blend literary storytelling with a culturally rooted visual style.”
